BALTIMORE, M.D.- FDU fell to Morgan State in a five-set battle on Saturday afternoon. The Knights are now 1-5 on the year after dropping two of three matches over the holiday weekend.
In a tight first set, the Knights totaled 15 kills on 31 attacks. This offensive output was enough to earn FDU an opening frame victory, 25-22.
The Knights put together an impressive combination of offense and defense on their way to a dominant second-set. Their front-line hit at a stellar .423 clip, while Morgan State hit in the negatives. FDU took the set 25-14 and grabbed a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
After the second-break of the match, momentum slipped away from the Knights. The Bears held the Knights to just 15 points, while dominating the third-set. This time it was FDU hitting in the negatives and the Bears getting the ball down with ease. Morgan State produced a .304 hitting percentage on limited attacks.
The FDU attack continued to slide in the fourth-set. They produced just 12 kills on a .062 hitting percentage. The Knights lack of production was due in part to 10 attacking errors. Morgan State capitalized on this and pushed the match to a fifth-set. 25-21.
The decisive set proved to be the closest of the match. The frame was tied at 10-10 before the Bears notched three of four points. This proved to be too much for FDU overcome as Morgan State completed their reverse-sweep with a 15-13 victory in the final set.
The Knights were led by Tatijana Fucka (14), Kylie Nott (14), and Madisyn Beirne (12) who all collected double-digit kill totals.
FDU will travel across state-borders, yet again, next weekend. The Knights will play three matches at the Steel Classic Tournament, hosted by Lehigh in Bethlehem, P.A. The first match is Friday at 4 p.m. against Binghamton.
